Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, so she was fostered by her mother grandma and godparents. In her childhood Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a month, she decided that it wasn't for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He went on to get recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut when she appeared as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in the year 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. The stage was her main focus and was a member of the company's 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition as a stand-up comedian that was added to her portfolio in 1996.
